Volunteers in Action was created in 1991 to provide opportunities for those who want to serve their community but due to career responsibilities have limited time to volunteer.

Through VIA, the Volunteer Center of Dallas County provides these busy individuals with structured and diverse volunteer projects.

Large group projects are planned bi-monthly by VIA’s board of directors. VIA has painted playrooms for Child Protective Services, cleared trails at the Dallas Nature Center and decorated cupcakes with nursing home residents.

This month, the group will work with People Helping People to demolish a garage, and in December, VIA will adopt several needy families.

“Our members’ favorite projects seem to include painting and cleaning – real hands-on activities,” says Robin Webb, neighborhood resident and VIA’s Volunteer Center liaison.

“Since our volunteer time is limited, we like to see the results of our efforts.”

VIA also offers a monthly project menu which features one-day opportunities for smaller groups of volunteers. VIA members can serve breakfast to the homeless before work or pick up trash at White Rock Lake.

VIA not only involves its members in the community, but also allows them to meet new people and gain valuable project management and team-building experience. For more information, call the VIA hotline at 214-826-6767, ext. 232.
