I saw an awesome show at the Palladium Ballroom last night, and I know at least some of my music-loving Lakewood neighbors were there because I ran in to a few of you.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season mesmerized, and at some points really rocked, the house — the duo is best known for their role in the movie, Once, for which they garnered a best-original-song Oscar for Falling Slowly (video).

The music was raw and painfully pretty, and the endearing couple was totally involved with the crowd — engaging in banter, offering up insightful Yoda-worthy commentary, cracking jokes and hollering at “someone” to turn off the raucous air conditioner. He even threw in a couple Van Morrison covers, plus a hilarious (and great) rendition of Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River” (took a minute for the crowd to catch on to that one).  It all made for an uplifting and borderline spiritual night for me.

For the probably many of you out there who have no idea who these folks are, (as the critic in this article writes, “The Swell Season are far from household names, but then again, popularity and quality are not synonymous”) I have a plea — next time you are renting a movie, skip the newly released action flick and pick up Once instead. I do not kid — the movie changed the way I look at life and the creative process in a great way. Then you will not be able to resist seeing The Swell Season next time they come to town.
