Block parties will be held all over our neighborhood tonight — as well as across the nation — as communities gather for National Night Out. The event, designed to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention as well as strengthen police-community ties, has become an annual tradition for many neighborhoods.

If your neighborhood is gathering, please post your party as a comment. But I also wanted to point out a non-residential gathering this evening. Super Target and many of the other businesses at the intersection of Skillman and Abrams are hosting their own National Night Out event from 6-8 p.m. with hot dogs, face painting, beaded jewelry making and raffle prizes. Subway, Tom Thumb, Carnival and State Farm are just a few of the businesses getting involved. As far as I know, it’s the first time businesses in our neighborhood have banded together for a National Night Out, and Temia Palmer from Target says it’s an opportunity for them to network with each other and with the Dallas Police Department in a unified effort against crime.

Certainly attend your own neighborhood’s National Night Out party tonight. But if you have even five or 10 minutes to spare, stop by the far end of Target’s parking lot near Burger King. Maybe you’ll win a cool raffle prize, but at the very least, you’ll let these businesses know that we appreciate their solidarity.
