In honor of June being National Safety Month, the Lakewood Neighborhood Association aims to provide residents with information related to crime and other safety concerns in the area.
In 1996, the National Safety Council established June as National Safety Month as a way to spread awareness about the leading causes of preventable injury and death. It continues to make a positive impact by promoting general safety.
Here are some program resources, neighborhood trends and general tips shared by Kale Schnettler, LNA board member and director of safety and crime watch, in the Lakewood Neighborhood Association’s email sent to members this week.
Lakewood Neighborhood Association Crime Watch
Crime Watch aims to protect residents by preventing crime proactively in Lakewood neighborhoods. According to the email, the program offers expanded patrol hours by off-duty Dallas Police officers, 35-hour weekly access to the patrol team through a Crime Watch phone number, exterior home checks upon request while residents are out of town, access to crime statistics and safety updates, and practical safety advice.
Crime Trends
Lakewood has seen a rise in burglary of motor vehicles in the past year, Schnettler stated in the email. He said most incidents have involved cars parked on the street as opposed to in driveways or garages, so the LNA recommends locking car doors and parking in enclosed areas whenever possible.
The association has also received reports of potential scams used in attempts to gain access to people’s homes, according to the email. Do not follow any instructions given by unknown contacts, and always report suspicious activity.
Home Protection Tips
The Lakewood Neighborhood Association urges residents to lock their homes and cars, keep valuable items hidden, install motion-sensitive lights on their porches and ensure that all packages are secured shortly after they arrive. Practicing these measures will go a long way in maximizing the safety of Lakewood and the greater Dallas community.
