You don’t need to look at your calendar to know summer is here — you can’t miss the intensity of the scorching Texas sun every time you step outside. But don’t let painful burns ruin your fun in the sun, check out these pro-tips from Karen Adams at McGuiness Dermatology in Lakewood.

Sunscreen: Always choose a sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher. Don’t forget to apply on such frequently missed spots as the nostrils, between the eyebrows and behind the ears. Remember to “pour a shot.” Say what? The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that adults apply a shot glass worth of sunscreen, so now you finally have a use for that tacky souvenir your friend gave you.

For the body, use Elta MD UV Sport SPF 50. This sunscreen is great for any outdoor activity and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

Antioxidant serums: These serums neutralize the free radicals (which can lead to wrinkles and skin cancers) that evade even the protection of sunscreen. They occur with UV exposure, but you can combat free radicals by layering on a serum with Vitamin C under your sunscreen.

My Picks: SkinMedica Vitamin C&E for an ultra smooth, primer-like feel under your sunscreen or try Revision Vitamin C 30 percent lotion for a creamier, more hydrating version. Heliocare can be used as a performance enhancer. It’s a FDA approved natural, oral antioxidant that when taken on a regular daily basis, may help to reduce the risk of burns, skin cancers and aging related to sun damage. But remember, it’s is not a sunscreen, and should not be used in place of a sunscreen.

Sunscreen powders: Makeup enhanced with SPF doesn’t always offer sufficient sunscreen protection. However, these powders help with the re-application process and give sunscreen a little extra boost. I also like that these powders can be applied over makeup and along the hairline and scalp, without leaving any obvious residue.

Brush_3shadesMy Picks: ColoreScience SunForgettable Mineral Sunscreen Brush SPF 50 because it’s portable, it comes in three shades and provides sheer, natural-looking protection against UVA/UVB.
