Velvet Taco, in a converted Church’s Chicken at Central Expressway and North Henderson, is the latest trendy taco place in our neighborhood. It’s in a great location, with easy freeway access amid a hip neighborhood.
It’s already a hotspot, and there’s no hype here. Velvet Taco is really, really good.
“Decadent” best describes their elotes:
Just look at that thing, overflowing with cream. Velvet taco does not keep a steaming container of cut corn back on the stove. They cut the corn off the cob to order. It’s major-league stuff.
There are 20 tacos at Velvet Taco, in the categories of chicken, vegetarian, pork, beef, fish and egg. Naturally, we ordered pig:
This is the house pulled pork taco, with thai basil, pineapple-habañero salsa and barbecue sauce ($3.75). The pork was delightful, perfectly moist, and even though the salsa is spicy, the Mexi-Asian flavors are wonderful.
There is a large beer and bottled soft drink selection, plus agave-sweetened fountain drinks.
Velvet Taco’s digs are really cool, with big communal tables and a long counter inside and a few tables outside. They encourage recycling, and they use all paper containers and recycled plastic forks.
