The Element Dallas Downtown East hotel, 4005 Gaston Ave., was repurposed from the former Dallas Health Rehabilitation Building next to Schlotzky’s and across from Baylor Scott & White hospital.
If you’ve driven down Gaston Avenue near Baylor over the years, you may have noticed a hulking brick-and-cement building next to what is now a Schlotzky’s restaurant.
You won’t recognize the former Dallas Health Rehabilitation Center now.
Perry and Salim Moulbhoy have transformed the old building into a new 151-room Element Dallas Downtown East hotel, 4005 Gaston Ave.
The hotel features two 3,000+ square foot suites on the top floor, a large breakfast area, indoor pool, multiple conference rooms — even a couple of bikes hotel guests can borrow.
The Element, which opens Dec. 31, employs about 35 people — many from the nearby neighborhood, says Michael Cosentino, general manager of the hotel.
“They remember when the building was an eyesore, and they can’t believe how nice it is now.”
The project has a “green global certification” and is the ultimate recycling project, with the original building’s floor plan and exterior repurposed into the Marriott-affiliated hotel, Cosentino says.
