I do not know why I watch the Westminster Kennel Club dog show every year. Yes, I like dogs and have owned dogs most of my life, but I don’t think that’s it. And I write about the pet business in one of my other lives, but the pet business and dog shows don’t really have that much in common. Nevertheless, I will be in front of the TV at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
Much of my interest probably comes from the fact that these are not dogs as I know them. They’re smarter, better trained and better behaved than any I have owned. Easily. Also, while beauty pageants bore me, I’ll sit for two hours and watch the dogs bounce around Madison Square Garden, one after the other – even though I don’t know enough about show judging to know quite what’s going on and the dogs I like never seem to win anything. Finally, there is something appealing about this event being 132 years old.
