Officers Reneeshia McIntyre and Delia Pesina were responding to a call Aug. 6 at an Old East Dallas apartment complex. While there, they met a 2-year-old and his mother.

They discovered that the mother, with help from a local church, had fled an abusive spouse with her six children, all under age 11. Several months after the move, the apartment still didn’t have any furniture.

“After leaving her apartment, I looked at my partner and said, ‘We need to do something to help her,'” Pesina said.

The pair collected donations from fellow officers and the community. They used the money to purchase mattresses, cribs, a sofa, a dining room table and more than $250 worth of groceries.

“The show of support was truly amazing and very overwhelming,” Pesina said.
