Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas is offering a week-long summer singing camp for students entering fourth- through eighth-grade. No audition is necessary to attend the camp. Two sessions are offered, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Thank to a grant from the Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, students enrolled in Dallas ISD schools can attend for free; otherwise, the camp costs $125. Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake recently received three United Premium Specialty Center designations for 2007-2009. The designations mean the hospital has met rigorous quality criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards and expert advice. Doctors Hospital received designations in cardio vascular surgery, the surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the thorax, or chest; electrophysiology, the cardiology specialty that diagnoses and treats heart arrhythmias; and interventional cardiology, the branch of the medical specialty of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter-based treatment of structural heart diseases. Lakewood Volunteers in Patrol (VIP) are looking for a few more Lakewood residents to join the program. While on patrol, volunteers observe and report any suspicious behavior to the Dallas Police. The program is non-confrontational in nature. It requires a minimum of two hours a week tailored to each volunteer’s schedule. Casa de Vida, a respite care program for caregivers of early onset Alzheimer’s and any other forms of dementia, is offered weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m at NorthPark Presbyterian Church, 9555 N. Central Expressway. It is strictly a social program, with no medications or health care administered. Activities include morning snacks, exercise, bingo, crafts and music. Andre Copling recently was awarded the quarterly firefighter award from the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands. Copling serves as a fire rescue officer and paramedic for Station 57. He has served at the station for 10 years and is a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.

Media Projects Inc. recently garnered the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award for its historical documentary on the State Fair of Texas, “A Fair to Remember.” The film was written, directed and produced by neighborhood residents Allen Mondell and Cynthia Salzman Mondell and co-produced by Phillip Allen. Lakewood resident Jim LeBlanc has been named by Corgan Associates Inc. as one of the firm’s associates. During his seven years at Corgan, LeBlanc has been involved with aviation and corporate design teams on top projects. Schools
Lakehill Preparatory School recently added a paper recycle container on the west side of the campus at the Vickery entrance, right along the route of the lower school carpool line. The school invites neighbors to drop off newspapers, magazines, office and school papers, shopping catalogs, mail, notes, scrap paper, and any other type of paper. Lakehill receives a small stipend for the paper recycled, and proceeds will be reinvested into Lakehill’s green plan, which educates students to be responsible citizens.

The Woodrow Wilson High School PTA granted more than $3,000 recently to fund specific requests from faculty and staff. The money allowed for the purchase of needed stethoscopes for a science class, a DLP projector and a digital camera. However, the school still needs multiple items, which it is hoping to have donated. These items include large trash cans, artificial plants, parts to repair a Minolta copy machine, a projection screen, a working TV and DVD player, and four window shades. The Woodrow Wilson High School PTA is seeking donations to fund scholarships for the school’s students. The PTA gives out college, vocational or technical school scholarships based on students’ scholastic record, character and financial need. The $500 scholarships are awarded to seniors who have not received monies in excess of $5,000 from other scholarship sources. Donations of any amount are welcome. Dallas ISD’s Project Opportunity Program has begun offering free tutoring in 24 of its schools as a result of a grant under the No Child Left Behind Act. The schools include East Dallas’ Robert T. Hill Middle School, J.L. Long Middle School, Bryan Adams High School and Woodrow Wilson High School. Free tutorial services will be provided during the school year through before-school, after-school and Saturday programs and during summer school. An online tutoring service is now being offered on the Dallas Public Library’s website, tailored for students from fourth to twelfth grade. The service is free to all DPL library card holders. The service can be accessed by visiting dallaslibrary.org and clicking DASH.

Students
Bishop Lynch football players and neighborhood residents Cahill Hooker, Thomas Puskarich and Michael Tamez recently signed commitments to play college football. Puskarich and Tamez will play for the Army at West Point in New York, and Hooker will play at Fordham University in New York.

Volunteers

The Wilkinson Center, an East Dallas non-profit agency, offers a free after-school tutoring and mentoring program, CLIMB (Changing Lives Improving Minds and Bodies) at seven sites. The Child Abuse Prevention Center needs volunteers to work with children of divorcing parents one Saturday morning a month during its Families First seminars.
