The annual Lakewood 4th of July Parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 3, at the corner of Cambria and Lakewood, says parade chairman Gary Weed.

This year’s theme is “Lakewood Salutes Sports Heroes”, Weed says, and parade participants are encouraged to dress and decorate their entries accordingly. There is no entry fee for the parade, which continues down Lakewood Boulevard to Williamson Park, where refreshments and Sno-Cones will be served.

A fun run is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., and parade entrants should assemble at Cambria and Lakewood beginning at 9:15 a.m., Weed says.

In past years, entries have included children in strollers and on bikes, cars and trucks decorated as parade-themed floats, and groups walking the parade route.

Shakespeare Festival Volunteers Needed for June, July Shows

The Shakespeare Guild needs individual volunteers and businesses, clubs or organizations to assist with summer productions of Shakespeare plays, according to Carol Winkelmann.

About 25 volunteers are needed each of the 30 performance nights to assist with gate/admission, parking, seating, security and souvenir sales.

Productions include: “The Merry Wives of Windsor” June 15-20 and 22-27; and “King Richard III” July 6-11, 13-18 and 20-25. The shows are staged at Samuell-Grand Park on Garland Road.

East Dallas YMCA Schedules Benefit Golf Tournament

The East Dallas YMCA will hold a benefit golf tournament to raise money for the Y’s teen programs, said project coordinator Susan Breaux.

The benefit is scheduled from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, June 26 and from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at Scotty’s Golf Park, 8787 Park Lane. Participants can play either one round of miniature golf or take a shot at the hole-in-one contest with a top prize of $25,000. Entry fee is $8. For information, call 824-8139.

Lakewood Pre-School PTA Distributes $23,000

The Lakewood Pre-School PTA recently announced donations to the Lakewood Elementary School, according to president Cheri Flynn.

Gifts include $2,350 for teacher gifts (supplies), $620 for roundup; $8,000 for computers and training; $4,830 for Phase I of a new sound system; $1,000 for a decorative banner; $1,300 for gym pads; $1,500 to support the artist-in-residence program; $1,500 for the Enrichment of the Arts program; $1,500 for an arts program; and $400 for music appreciation projects.

The group is comprised of Lakewood-area mothers who donate their time to raise funds to support the neighborhood elementary school. For more information, call Flynn at 348-0234.

Lakewood Service League Votes $36,000 to Organizations

Lakewood Service League members recently voted to distribute more than $36,000 to neighborhood organizations, according to outgoing president Anne Connor.

Groups receiving donations include Woodrow Wilson, $1,400 for a greenhouse program; Our Friends Place, $3,000 to support one participant; Visiting Nurses Association, $2,500 for the Meals on Wheels program for needy neighborhood residents; Disciples of Trinity, $2,000 to stock a food pantry for the terminally ill; St. Matthew’s, $2,500 for a reading program; DCA, $1,440 to help sponsor two children.

Also, the Wilkinson Center, $5,570 for children’s aid, food and clothing; Greater Lakewood Shepherd Center, $3,000 for programs serving neighborhood elderly residents; the Juliette Fowler Home, $2,000 to support a youth summer school for special-need children; Lakewood United Methodist-Firehouse Ministry, $1,500 for a tutorial program; Stonewall Jackson Elementary, $1,000 to support the Hands-On Artist Enrichment Program; the YWCA, $2,600 for Wednesday meals for CYAH; the Park and Endowment Fund, $2,500; and the emergency fund, $1,500.

St. Thomas Honors Outstanding Athletes

Three eighth-grade students at St. Thomas Aquinas, 3741 Abrams, recently were honored for athletic achievements.

Roberto Estrada, Shelley Larkin and Neely Richards were recognized for their ability to balance academics, sports and sportsmanship, according to principal David Ross.

Swiss Avenue District, Preservation League Combine for Cookbook

In anticipation of the Swiss Avenue Historic District’s upcoming Dec. 3-5 Holiday Home Tour, the district and the Historic Preservation League are teaming up to produce a cookbook, according to Suzanne Palmlund, chairman of the event.

The “Holiday Traditions” cookbook will feature color photos, recipes compiled by district residents, and entertaining ideas for Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s events. It is expected to sell for $14.95.

YWCA Opens Thrift Shop

The Metropolitan YWCA, 4621 Ross, recently opened “Y’s Buys”, a thrift shop featuring clothing and accessories for women, men and children.

The shop is staffed primarily by volunteers, with proceeds benefiting the YWCA’s Career and Job Development Programs, which help men and women entering or re-entering the work force.

“Many of these men and women have no professional wardrobe and cannot afford to buy a business suit or outfit,” says Sharon King, senior executive officer for the YWCA Women’s Resource Center.

To volunteer or donate clothing, call 827-0881. The shop is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m, Thursday evenings until 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

CLEMENTS HONORED: Clements, Realtors is among several City businesses named Employers of the Year by the City’s Senior Affairs Commission. The awards are presented to employers selected by Senior Employment Effort Dallas “for having made significant efforts to provide and promote equal employment opportunities for older workers”. Mayor Steve Bartlett presented the award at a ceremony last month. Clements was honored for creating the first Senior Services Division in a local real estate company.

KEYING ON TALENT: Eight students of neighborhood piano instructor Carolyn Palmer have registered as candidates for membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians, playing in the National Piano Playing Auditions held locally. The local entrants included Dillon Hutchens, Bethany Human, Matthew Lipman, J.P. Nelson, Candace Roberts, Jessica Ryan, Alexandra Schorn and Melinda Urbina.

FISHY BUSINESS: Neighborhood third-grader John Heindel recently received the red ribbon of excellence at the Association of Christian Schools International Science Fair. Heindel is a student at First Baptist Academy; his winning entry was entitled “The Fishmeter”, which is designed to indicate whether the upcoming 24-hour period would result in a clear day for fishing. “When my family goes fishing, we like to camp or stay in cabins without TV,” Heindel says. “Without a weatherman, it is hard to know the night before if the weather will be clear to get up early and take a boat out on the water to go fishing. With the Fishmeter, we can have the confidence in the early hours of the morning that a clear and sunny day is on its way.”

STROLLING FOR DOLLARS: The Summer Stroll for Epilepsy, sponsored by the Dallas Epilepsy Association, is scheduled from 8 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at the Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland. MBA GRAD MOVES EAST: Neighborhood resident Joann Ferguson is one of three Southern Methodist University MBA graduates going to work with an Eastern European business as part of the MBA Enterprise Corps. Ferguson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 and received her SMU MBA last month. She will work for MService in Warsaw, Poland.

AUCTION/DINNER PLANNED: The American Association of University Women Child Development Center has scheduled a silent auction, dinner and country-western dance June 5 at Lakewood Country Club, 6430 Gaston, from 6:30-11 p.m. Among the auction items are concert and movie tickets, dinners and a Southwest Airlines trip.
