Woodrow Golf Tourney at Lakewood C.C. Raises $22,000 to Benefit Athletic Department
The Tim Brown/Woodrow Wilson Golf Tournament last month raised more than $22,000 to benefit Woodrow’s athletic programs, says Gregg Hill, tournament organizer.
The tournament was organized following cuts to Woodrow’s athletic budget, resulting in a total allocation of $26,138 for more than 400 student athletes. Some suburban schools spend more than twice that amount for their football programs, says George Theriot, another tournament organizer.
The event, held at Lakewood Country Club, attracted more than 148 golfers and generated proceeds of $22,863.44. The funds will be presented to Woodrow’s athletic department at the school’s Sports’ Banquet May 18.
Headliner Tim Brown, a former Woodrow Wilson sports standout and Heisman Trophy winner, plays for the Los Angeles Raiders football team. Other celebrities participating included Robert Newhouse, Jethro Pugh, Ralph Neeley, Jeff Gossett, Tom Rossley, Tim Lewis and Kevin McCarthy.
Woodrow alumni James Ostler and Steve Jolley joined Theriot and Hill as event organizers.
East Dallasite Wins Watercolor Society Award
East Dallas resident Joseph Melancon was among three Dallas winners at the recent American Watercolor Society’s 125th Annual Exhibition in New York.
“I was shocked,” Melancon says, “because it’s the most prestigious watercolor show in the world.”
Melancon’s work, “Yellow Ribbons”, was among 15 prizes awarded during the exhibition. Melancon, who has a studio near White Rock Lake, joined other Dallas winners Betsy Dillard Stroud and Leo Smith.
Melancon is a board member of the Southwest Watercolor Society in Dallas, and he recently completed a one-man show at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther. Malancon’s primary interest is in landscapes, but he also is working on a Native American series.
The awards, which included a $1,200 cash prize, will be presented May 1 in New York.
TV Show Filmed at White Swan in Lakewood
Hollywood came to Lakewood last month when the CBS-TV series “Dangerous Curves” filmed the closing shot for one of its May episodes at the White Swan Cafe, 2307 Abrams. More than 60 crewmen and technicians were involved in the filming, and four East Dallas residents were filmed for the episode: Francisco Ramirez, Isela Castro, Amy McBrayer and Hough Marshall.
Series stars participating in the filming included Lisa Cutter (“Havana” with Robert Redford), Michael Michelle (“New Jack City), and Gregory McKinney (“Navey Seals” with Charlie Sheen).
McKinney, who plays the Detective Oz in the crime series, said Lakewood reminds him of his home in West Hollywood.
“There are a lot of single-family homes where I live,” McKinney said. “As a matter of fact, I was saying to myself if the show continues a couple of years, I’d buy a house (in Lakewood).”
How was the White Swan chosen for filming?
“The producers chose Lakewood and the White Swan because they liked Lakewood’s varied and ‘settled in’ look architecturally,” Marshall says.
Hollywood director Michael Preece, whose credits include “MacGyver”, “Dallas”, “Falcon Crest”, “Young Riders”, “T.J. Hooker” and “The Streets of San Francisco”, led the California cast and crew.
The show is broadcast at 11 p.m. Wednesdays on Channel 4.
East Mockingbird Area Organizes New Neighborhood Group
The East Mockingbird Neighborhood Association recently was organized for the area north of East Mockingbird, south of the MKT Railroad tracks, west of Abrams Road and east of Brentcove (the street prior to Lawther), says newly elected vice president Allen Gwinn.
Other officers of the association include Dave Metzler, president and Tammy Rotem, treasurer. Committee chairmen include Sam and Candy Wynn, crime watch; Bruce Smith, beautification; Karen Smith, directory; Time and Marlene Griffin, social; and Pauline Rodke, newsletter.
Neighbors are invited to attend the next general meeting, scheduled at 7 p.m. May 4 at the Dallas Police Department’s northeast substation, 9915 E. Northwest Highway at Audelia.
White Rock Bike Patrol Ceremony Set May 16
The Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce will present funding to the Dallas Police Department benefiting the department’s bicycle patrol May 16 at 10 a.m. at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther.
The chamber has worked with other community members to raise funds for equipment and uniforms for two bicycle patrol officers for White Rock Lake, says Judy Summers of the chamber. The ceremony will recognize those who have contributed to the activity.
The ceremony is being held in conjunction with the 4th annual Mahatma Genie 5K Race, Run Walk and One Mile Run sponsored by the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. Call 321-6446 or 670-4088 for information.
Shepherd Center Schedules Trips for Area Seniors
The Greater Lakewood Shepherd Center has scheduled four trips for neighborhood seniors, says Sylvia Sanders of the Shepherd Center.
The group plans a tour of Fort Worth’s Botanical and Japanese Gardens May 5, as well as a trip to the Omni Theater for “Ring of Fire”, a movie about Pacific rim volcanos. Cost is $17 for members, $20 for non-members.
On June 1, the group will sponsor a one-day trip to Fossel Rim Ranch for a picnic and wildlife expedition. Cost is $23 for members, $26 for non-members.
A three-day trip to the Texas Hill Country is scheduled Sept. 14-16, taking in the MO Ranch on the Guadalupe River banks. Cost is $175.
And a seven-day southern Caribbean cruise is scheduled beginning Dec. 13, featuring stops at San Juan, Martinique, Barbados, Antigua, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and San Juan. Cost starts at $1,365 per person.

COOKBOOK AVAILABLE: The Family Outreach of East Dallas, a volunteer organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect, has compiled recipes from volunteers into a cookbook titled “Family Favorites”. SUNDAY IN THE CEMETERY: The Historic Preservation League has scheduled its annual “Sunday in the Cemetery” historical tour May 17 beginning at 2 p.m. at Emanu-El Cemetery, Lemmon Avenue and N. Central Expressway, says Marjie Acheson of the league. The cemetery was established in 1884 and has received a Texas Historical marker. “This is the resting place for some of Dallas’ most notable early merchants, including the Sangers, E.M. SILVER BEAVER AWARD RECEIVED: East Dallas resident Cynthia Whisennand recently received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, honoring her service to youth during more than 12 years with scouting. Woodrow Wilson graduate Whisennand is the daughter of East Dallas resident Diane Neel.
