Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake will host a free family-friendly event for the community on Saturday, May 4, in honor of Native Plants and Prairies Day. The event, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., celebrates North Texas’ Blackland Prairies.

Activities include speakers, exhibits, prairie tours, native plant sales and activities for all ages to help visitors understand why prairies are worth preserving and how they support wildlife.

Several guest speakers will present throughout the day, these include:

  • Judy Meagher: Insects of the Prairie – 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Karin and Roberto Sauce: Coyotes: Living in Harmony with America’s Song Dog – 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Amy Martin: Discover North Texas Prairies – 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • John Watts: What’s the Buzz: An Introduction to the Bees of North Texas – 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Nancy Wilson: Landscaping for Birds – 2:15 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Janet Smith: Year-Round Blooms with Native Perennials – 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Speakers will help attendees learn more about the DFW prairies as habitats for bugs, mammals and other wildlife presented by Native Plant Society of Texas.

Prairie tours, guided by experts, will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tour guides include wildlife biologists, botanists, gardeners and naturalists covering a variety of topics including history and ethnobotany of the White Rock Prairie 

Parking is limited, carpooling, walking, riding your bike or using rideshare service is recommended. Overflow parking is available in White Rock Lake Park at Dreyfuss Point, Stone Tables, Big Thicket, Boy Scout Hill, and along E. Lawther Dr. Additional parking may be available on adjacent neighborhood streets, as permitted.
