It’s never too early to start thinking about Mother’s Day (or so my mom says). With that in mind, here are a few ideas:

• Don’t forget the bubbly. Sparkling wines from Alsace, called cremant, are well made and quite good values at around $15. Try the Willm Cremant D’Alsace — not as rich as traditional Champagne, but with many Champagne qualities.

• A lighter, fruity red wine like Martin Codax Ergo, around $13, from Spain. I was surprised at how food-friendly it was when I tasted it, even with something like salmon.

• Boony Doon Pacific Rim Riesling, for about $10, is an off-dry white wine (which means it’s sweeter). It hasn’t suffered in the Boony Doon corporate shakeup, and paired nicely with a spicy chickpea stew.
