nks to Hollywood/Santa Monica resident Ann Spicer, Minyard’s will go out with a bang. Spicer and some of her friends are organizing a "Hy-Top Nite" in honor of Minyard’s store brand, which can be found on items ranging from toilet paper to chicken noodle soup. "We figured we won’t be able to find Hy-Top at Whole Foods," Spicer quips.
The shindig takes place next Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Lakewood Bar and Grill during happy hour, from 5-7:30 p.m. A complimentary Hy-Top buffet and soft drinks will be served while local band Heimlich & the Maneuvers cranks out the tunes. Spicer says they may build some sort of memorial shrine to Minyard’s, and perhaps open the floor for fond memories and tribute poetry.
But the best part? The purpose of the party is to collect donations that will alleviate medical bills for former Minyard’s manager Russell Plunk and his family. Plunk managed the store for 12 years and knew many neighbors by name. Soon after he was promoted and left the store, Plunk was diagnosed with brain cancer and still suffers from it. Spicer is even hoping to convince the Minyard’s corporate office to match donations and also allow people to contribute at the store. (Since Minyard’s never even had the courtesy to return calls for our February story about the changeover, we’re not holding our breath, but we do wish her luck in this quest.)
Anyone who has questions or wants to make a contributions should contact Spicer at 214.448.8204. Only six shopping days left …
