About two years ago, when Nicole Gonzalez DeVoss was searching for baby bedding for her first child, she came up short. “I couldn’t find anything modern, and I’m not really into the cutesy stuff,” she says. “I wanted to taper the collections to adult taste.” So the Hollywood/Santa Monica resident decided to make her own. This year she launched a line of modern baby bedding called Urban Crawl. The collection currently includes four sets of baby bedding in modern patterns, but she’s hoping to expand. “I’ll probably add more designs to the collection every year,” she says. Though her line is still growing, DeVoss’ heart for children is as big as they come. A New Orleans native and Hurricane Katrina evacuee, DeVoss still remembers watching hours of news footage about the city’s children. “I had a 6-month-old at the time, and they kept showing infants that needed help on the news,” she says. “I could hardly watch without thinking about what I could do to help.” Because of this experience, she has pledged to donate a percentage of each year’s profits to charities benefiting infants and toddlers in crisis.
