The world smells better because of neighborhood resident Andrew Nevitt and his brother, Jim. Their family business, Nevitt Fragrances, primarily creates fragrance oils used in household products such as candles, potpourri and cosmetics. Their father, Joe Nevitt, bought into the little start-up company back in the ’80s, and Andrew says it wasn’t necessarily in the sons’ cards to follow in his footsteps. “He didn’t know anything about fragrances, but there were too many personalities and somehow he ended up with the entire company,” Andrew says. Without any competition in the area and only about 40 similar companies in the entire , the two brothers have found a solid niche. One of the most unusual requests they receive is to duplicate fragrances. Yes, they can duplicate expensive perfumes, but Andrew notes that “it can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of months. A lot of times our customers might have an idea on a fragrance that is really hard to describe.” They also have a tendency to bring their work home. Jim admits that his house is full of candles. “We are constantly bringing home items that are coming out of the lab,” Andrew says. “Many times, we will do something, and it smells great the first day we make it, and we take it home and then realize maybe it is not ready for the market yet.” Their favorite scents? Andrew prefers vanilla and baking smells, while Jim is partial to anything jasmine-infused.
