Fresh fruits and veggies are being delivered right to our neighborhood, and you can easily get your hands on the wholesome goodies. Twice a month, members of the Lakewood Organic Co-Op drive up, pick up, and take off with bins of produce that might include a compilation of in-season items such as broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, garlic, potatoes, tomatoes, avocados, apples, oranges, pears, lemons and bananas, to name a few. It costs $50 for a full share (about 20 to 30 pounds) or $25 for a half-order. Organizer Rachel Winner believes the price is significantly less expensive than shopping at a specialty grocery store. She and a few Lakewood-area friends have been members of an Organic Food Co-op in Richardson for the past year, but she really wanted to bring the idea closer to home, and these days, it’s about as close as possible. “A truck delivers the food to my house every other Saturday. We sort it into bins, and then members come pick it up.” Everyone gets the same thing, but you can order extras, and people often use delivery morning to swap items. Winner is passionate about local and organic shopping. She even includes a newsletter about organic shopping, along with recipes, in each of the bins. “I wasn’t really sure how to cook cauliflower at first. I want to help people understand all the things they can do with the food they get through the co-op,” she says. “It really is an amazing opportunity for families to save money on produce and feel good that they are supporting local farmers, without the hassle of shopping. It is convenient for busy people, because everything is already there, ready to go.”
