Twenty years ago, Amy Martin was knee-deep in the city’s rough and tumble music scene. As the original Street Beat reporter at the Dallas Observer, she had her share of “late nights and too many vices,” she says. But these days, her sights are set on the spiritual arts — which can be just as invigorating as punk rock was in the 1980s. Her non-profit organization Earth Rhythms is getting ready to launch a series of New Age acts at the historic Lakewood Theater, beginning with a performance by enchantress Deva Premal and her husband Miten, along with special guest flute player Manose. The show is billed as “the yoga of sacred song and chant.” “She is like a goddess,” Martin says of Premal. Earth Rhythms’ plans include a series of musical, artistic and spoken-word performances at the Lakewood Theater. “The theater has a wonderful vibe by nature of the neighborhood and its history,” Martin says. Martin says that, like herself, Dallas has evolved over the years and is ready for the spiritual, metaphysical arts. “Dallas is a hungry place, and they want to be fed,” she says. She credits organizations such as the innovative TITAS with “training Dallas that there’s more to big stage than musicals.”
