Forget Taco Bell. Tacos Mariachi wants to be the neighborhood’s go-to place for late-night munchies.

Owner Jesús Carmona filed a zoning change application in December that would allow the restaurant to become a “late-night establishment” and operate after midnight, according to the application.

The taqueria’s second location on Lower Greenville closes at 4 p.m. Sunday and 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Carmona said he would like to stay open until midnight during the week and even later on the weekends, possibly until 4 a.m.

“A lot of places close at 2 a.m. and people get hungry,” he said.

The application’s approval could take up to three months — just in time for warmer weather. Carmona is also waiting to obtain a liquor license so he can serve margaritas and other alcoholic beverages.

Tacos Mariachi serves traditional taqueria fare, as well as Tex-Mex favorites. The eatery also made a splash with unusual menu items like octopus tacos, which caught the attention of “Diners, Drive Ins and Dives” in 2018.
