Philip Kingston is the new District 14 city councilmember.

In a tight race this weekend, Philip Kingston came out on top in the District 14 runoff election. It wasn’t exactly a landslide, the Dallas Morning News reports. Kingston secured 2,390 votes to Bobby Abtahi’s 2,003.

Kingston will replace longtime city council lightening rod, Angela Hunt, who has served her maximum of four consecutive terms in the East Dallas district.

Kingston led over Abtahi by 34 percent took about 34 percent of the vote in the general election May 11. Abtahi had been well financed compared to the other seven candidates and widely endorsed, although Hunt endorsed Kingston along with the Dallas Morning News editorial board.

Kingston will be sworn in June 24 along with the city’s four other newcomers: Lee Kleinman for North Dallas’ District 11, Jennifer Staubach Gates for Preston Hollow’s District 13, Rick Callahan for District 5, representing parts of southern Dallas and Adam Medrano in District 2.
