Weis, along with two Kansas recruiters, came to talk business with Colin Spencer, the Woodrow athlete who has committed to Kansas and is set to sign on first of February.

Spencer and his parents, Celeste and Rob, the pastor of Ridgewood Park United Methodist Church at 6445 East Lovers Lane, were excited about the opportunity for Spencer to sign on with the Kansas Jayhawks. His parents were especially impressed by the emphasis Kansas puts on academics.

Weis says and he and his staff look for more than just an athlete; they look for young men of character.

“We believe that recruiting and football have to be intertwined with social and academics. You have to recruit the whole person, not just the athlete,” Weis says. “We want to recruit high-character kids that want to graduate.”

Woodrow football coach Bobby Estes says Spencer is the man for the job. “When he was a sophomore, I knew he was going to be special,” Estes insists. Not only does Spencer “jump higher and run faster than most human beings,” but he’s also a hard worker and a selfless team player, Estes says.

“Colin wants to do well, and he wants to do the right thing,” Estes says. “He was a role model.”

And let’s not forget, going to University of Kansas is no small achievement, Estes points out. “Anytime you can go to a major conference school, you’ve accomplished something.”
