The deadline is just around the corner for students to apply for many of the innovative programs and schools offered in the district.
Jan. 31 is the application deadline for magnet schools, transformation schools, the two-way dual-language program and collegiate academies. These programs and schools provide District 2 students with a myriad of choices to prepare them for future success.
Here are more details on each of the different programs:
Magnet schools
- Dallas ISD is home to some of the nation’s top magnet schools, which offer programs for every age level covering a variety of interests.
- While District 2 is home to several magnet schools — Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy and K.B. Polk Center for Academically Talented and Gifted — District 2 students can apply to magnet schools across the district.
- Students applying to attend a magnet school must meet certain academic eligibility requirements.
- Applications are available at org/Page/18214.
Transformation schools
- District 2 students can apply to attend any of the Dallas ISD transformation schools, which offer specialized academic programming and do not have academic entry requirements.
- The transformation schools accepting applications are Mata Montessori (preschool for 3-4 year olds and Kindergarten); Solar Preparatory School for Girls at James B. Bonham (Kindergarten); D.A. Hulcy STEAM Middle School (sixth-grade); IDEA High School at James W. Fannin (ninth-grade); CityLab High School (ninth-grade).
- Applications are available at dallasisd.org/page/32984.
Two-way dual-language program
- The two-way dual-language program puts Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students in the same classroom, teaches them the same curriculum in both languages, and creates bilingual and bicultural students.
- Students in pre-K through first-grade are eligible to enroll in the program. The program extends as students advance from grade level to grade level.
- More than 50 Dallas ISD schools offer the two-way dual language program, and many of those are in District 2.
- Applications can be downloaded at org/page/41032.
Collegiate Academies
- Students enrolled in collegiate academies can earn up to 60 hours of college credit or an associate degree, at no cost to them, while earning their high school diploma.
- Only current eighth-graders can enroll in a collegiate academy for next year.
- North Dallas High School and Hillcrest High School will both offer collegiate academies next school year.
- Applications are available at org/page/41447.
These schools and programs are a big part of what makes Dallas ISD special, and I encourage all District 2 families to look into these options and see if any of them could be a good fit.
