A new Tex-Mex eatery from the minds behind The Rustic, Bowl & Barrel and Mutts Canine Cantina is opening on Fitzhugh Avenue next month.

Joe Leo will open at 2722 N. Fitzhugh Ave. in the space formerly occupied by El Bolero, which closed in January 2020, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The concept was inspired by Joe Leo Romero, the grandfather of co-owner Kyle Noonan. Romero left Mexico at 13 and settled in New Mexico, where he started working in the restaurant industry. He made tortillas by hand every morning — a practice Noonan will continue at the eatery, according to the Morning News.

The menu will feature traditional Tex-Mex like fajitas, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, queso and guacamole.

Large garage doors will separate the indoor dining room from an outdoor patio with a fountain and fire pit. Greenery and vintage lights will hang from the ceiling with tequila bottles and sombreros lining the walls.

The restaurant will open May 5, but neighbors can get an early taste beginning April 19. The eatery will sell delivery-only fajitas and margaritas from 4-8 p.m. through the website or DoorDash. Anyone who places an order could win prizes like a year of free queso or a reserved table at the grand opening.

The grand opening will include margaritas, fajitas, golden tacos, mini donkeys, a pop-up bar, a DJ and mariachi band.
