It’s time for “Much Ado About Hollywood,” the annual home tour presented by the Hollywood/Santa Monica Neighborhood Association.
In 1996, an estimated 1,500 people attended the tour.
Now in its sixth year, the tour will take place Sunday, April 27, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and feature seven English Tudor and Craftsman-style homes.
Tickets for the home tour are $8 and can be purchased in advance from the Minyard’s at Gaston and Abrams or on tour day in Lindsley Park, at the corner of Tension Memorial and Lindsley Avenue.
Proceeds benefit the Shakespeare Festival of Dallas, the Lakewood Branch of the Dallas Public Library, the reading room at the Town Park Housing Project and the neighborhood association.
“The home tour is the brightest of many events for this historical neighborhood,” says Greg Furman, association president.
“Not only are the homes wonderful, but the alliance with the Shakespeare Festival and the dedicated involvement of many volunteers serves as a model for community interest that makes East Dallas a special place to live.”
Featured homes on the tour include 414 Valencia, home of David and Mary Lubin; 515 Valencia, home of Andra Kuchera; 1003 Valencia, home of Ed and Kathy Zahra; 623 Clermont, home of Gary Trotter and Tom Peterson; 803 Clermont, home of Steve Christensen; 904 Clermont, home of Tom Hoitsma; and 1011 Clermont, home of Paul and Laura Leighton.
In addition to touring the showcased homes, visitors can view a garden in progress designed by neighborhood resident and English gardener Patrick Butterworth, who will be present to guide visitors through the Provence-style garden at 7001 Hammond.
On Saturday night, April 26, from 7:30-11 p.m., the neighborhood association and the Shakespeare Festival will host a benefit pre-tour party and silent auction at the Lakewood Theater. Last year, the pre-party and tour raised a combined $16,000 for the Shakespeare Festival, Friends of White Rock Lake, the Lakewood Library and the neighborhood association.
Tickets for the party are $30, the price of which includes home tour admission. Beer, wine and hors d’ oeuvres will be provided. Tickets for the party can be purchased from Charlotte Proffitt at 214-320-1965.

Keep Dallas Beautiful: The Ridgewood Park Neighborhood Association in conjunction with the Keep Dallas Beautiful organization will hold an Alley/Rush Creek Clean-up April 19. Participants meet at the pavillion next to the Ridgewood/Belcher Recreation Center at 9 a.m. Bring sturdy yard gloves and rakes. T-Shirts, hats, trash bags and a hot dog lunch will be provided. Local Doctor Awarded: The Texas Optometric association honored neighborhood resident Dr. Joe DeLoach as Optometrist of the Year at its recent convention in Austin. DeLoach is the Director of the Dallas/Ft. Worth offices of the Omega Health System and has been in private practice in Lakewood/East Dallas since 1982.
Holman Joins Board: East Dallas resident Helen Holman recently joined the Board of Directors of the Wednesday’s Child Benefit Corporation. Holman is Director of Community Ministries and Outreach at Presbyterian Healthcare System.

Preservation Seminar: Preservation Dallas will conduct a seminar on preserving Dallas architecture for architects and interested citizens on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Preservation Center, 2922 Swiss Avenue. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Historic Resources Committee, costs $75 and includes lunch and a 3-hour bus tour of local historic sites.
