Jason Witten and Arike Ogunbowale brought composition notebooks, pencils, construction paper and classroom cleaning supplies to Grace Maringo’s class. And Amanda Stargell’s class received items including markers, colored pencils, pens and paper.

Walmart donated $100,000 to Dallas schools through DonorsChoose, a nonprofit that helps combat racial and socioeconomic inequity in school funding. A portion of that $100,000 went to Hill Middle School, and Walmart fulfilled the wish lists of two teachers.

“In the midst of the past three, challenging school years, teachers have been going the extra mile to enrich learning in the classroom,” DonorsChoose CEO Alix Guerrier says in a press release. “At a time when educators need our support more than ever, Walmart, Jason Witten and Arike Ogunbowale are empowering teachers through the extra resources their students need to learn.”

Hill Middle School enrolls over 800 students, and because almost 90% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch and over 50% of students are Black, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander or multiracial, DonorsChoose considers Hill an equity focus school.

According to DonorsChoose, teachers who work with mostly students of color spend more out of pocket on classroom materials compared to schools with mostly white students.

Afterward, the athletes traveled to the Walmart at Northwest Highway and Skillman Street to thank the store’s pharmacists.
