Now that the busy holiday season is upon us, it’s easy to forget that our four-legged friends require a little extra attention.
Check out these tips to make this season easier for everyone.
Pets as Gifts
The idea of a soft, fluffy bundle of fur sounds like a thoughtful gift. But remember: Pets aren’t disposable, and one size doesn’t fit all.
Before an SPCA adoption, we conduct counseling to ensure the pet and owner are a good match and that the adoption isn’t based upon a whim or impulse.
We want the recipient to be happy with his new friend, so we encourage giving a gift certificate rather than a pet.
Guests
Are guests dropping by for the holidays? If you dog becomes excited when guests arrive, put the leash and collar on first. Pet and guest alike will be happier with this arrangement.
Christmas Trees and Ornaments
Although beautiful to gaze upon, a Christmas tree can be hazardous to your pet’s health. Inquisitive pets may eat tinsel or ornaments, which can block or perforate an intestinal tract.
Puppies or dogs that enjoy chewing may find electrical cords lead to a “shocking” conclusion: severe mouth burns. Spray bitter apple on the cords: The spray will discourage pets from chewing.
Candles should be kept out of your pet’s reach. An accident with a lit candle could lead to a heated Christmas conclusion.
Plants are popular gifts and decorations, but some cause problems for pets. Poinsettias aren’t poisonous, but they can make a pet sick. Other holiday plants to keep out of reach include Christmas rose, English holly, Jerusalem cherry and amaryllis.
SPCA Calendar
Nov. 29 – Dec. 23 – From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., NorthPark Adopts the SPCA of Texas. Visit a gingerbread house filled daily with 11 animals who need good homes. Last year, 284 pets were adopted during this promotion. Volunteers are needed to work 4-hour shifts; call Michelle at 651-9611 for information.
Dec. 7 – From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Christmas at Repeats! Benefit Store, 14350 Marsh Lane @ Spring Valley. Sale proceeds benefit the SPCA; items include crafts, baked goods and SPCA logo gifts.
Dec. 7 – From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Christmas at the SPCA features trees, wreaths, crafts, ornaments and baked goods.
SPCA Gift Ideas
For the person with everything, how about a personalized brick with a three-line message? Honor a beloved pet or loved one while helping the SPCA build a spay/neuter clinic. Each brick costs $50; call the SPCA for information.
