Abstract Artist Brett Dyer will have a reception at The Point at C.C. Young from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The art gallery will display Brett’s exhibit, “Spiritual Vessels,” through Jan. 26. The gallery is free and open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Hardcore punk and grindcore musicians are banding together to help La Panaderia Chichen Itza on Lower Greenville pay its property taxes. The acts are performing to help a restaurant that is known for giving bands a place to perform. The benefit will include Releaser, Escuela, Pissed Grave, Hood Rat and Mouth Breather on Friday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7-$12.

Sunday night from 7-9 p.m. will be the Rhythm Room’s monthly Swing Social. Dancing, refreshments and cheesy New Year’s jokes will run you $5, including a 15-minute swing lesson at 7 p.m.

Unity on Greenville will host a lively West African drum circle in the gathering space on Sunday at 5 p.m., so bring a djembe if you have one and drum on. There is a $10 suggested donation.

The Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts Jazz Band will showcase its talents at “JazzStand on Abrams” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Wilshire Baptist Church.
