The Advocate’s cover story for August features architects in front of neighborhood places they find inspiring. There were a few portraits that didn’t make it into the magazine because of circumstance. Gerald Worrell III, one of the featured architects and a Lakewood local, originally chose another Dallas landmark. To find out more about his take on The Kalita Humphreys Theater, hit the jump.

Here is what Worrell had to say about Dallas Theater Center’s iconic building:
“It’s a Frank Lloyd Wright design, and the feel of the theater has always been one that was always very comfortable. I just like the way it was kind of plugged into the hill, there beside Turtle Creek. And it’s a facility that has lasted a long time in terms of serving the purpose for which it was originally intended. In the architectural world, that’s not always the case.”
The Kalita Humphreys Theater is one of two Wright structures in Dallas. The other, the Gillin House, is featured in Preston Hollow’s Get Inpired cover story. In fact, there are only four standing Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the state. Sadly, The Kalita Humphreys Theater was finished after Wright’s passing, so he never got to see the finished project.
