The organization, which works to preserve and maintain the Aldredge House on Swiss Avenue as a living history museum, is being honored with a Dallas History Makers Award for Excellence from the Dallas Historical Society.

Awards were established on behalf of the trustees of the Dallas Historical Society in 1981. Individuals and organizations selected for the awards contribute to the quality of life in Dallas in categories including arts leadership, creative arts, education, history, humanities, philanthropy, sports leadership and volunteer community leadership. A new awards category, the Dallas Historical Society Benefactor of the Year, has also been added.

Friends of Aldredge House is receiving an award in the humanities category. The other awards recipients are Stan Graff, Gail Sachson, Lyric Stage, Carine Feyten, Talmage Boston, Michael Boone, Brad Sham and Tori Mannes.

The Aldredge House turned 100 years old in 2017. It was originally built for William J. Lewis as a wedding gift for his bride, Willie Newbury, but they lived in the house for only a year, according to the Friends of Aldredge House website. In 1921, it was purchased by George and Rena Munger Aldredge, who lived in the house for more than 50 years. George was a banker, and Rena was the daughter of Stephen I. Munger, who managed the family’s cotton gin business.

An awards luncheon is scheduled for Nov. 17.
