Adelfa Botello Callejo Elementary School in Pleasant Grove, one of DISD’s brand-new primary schools, has 39 classrooms and 97,000 square feet. But the leadership of the school is nothing new.

After the DISD board of trustees voted to close the highly successful Bonham Elementary School on North Henderson to save $1.4 million earlier this year, principal Sandra Fernandez was asked to helm the new Callejo elementary. And she brought almost her entire staff to the new school. That includes teachers, secretaries, custodians and cafeteria workers.

Even though she was sad to leave Bonham, Fernandez told KERA news that she is thrilled with the new school.

Teacher Rogelio Garcia told the radio station: “We should be the best in Pleasant Grove. After a couple years, we should be the best in Dallas. And a year after that we should be the best in Texas.”

Adelfa Callejo herself, the 89-year-old attorney and civil rights leader, announced last week she has two brain tumors.
