Temperatures are warming, sure. But we’re all going to be spending a lot of time indoors in the next few weeks, because May in Dallas presents the highest average rainfall of any single month. So what to do when you’re bored out of your mind and need an escape from the showers outside? Why not delve into a good book? Fortunately, there are plenty of mom-and-pop bookstores — with both new and used texts — to choose from in our neighborhood, each with its own personality. At Mysteries and More, 2011 Abrams, you’ll find a neatly organized, small selection of exactly that, with a children’s book area in the back, all at reasonable prices. At Paperbacks Plus, 6115 La Vista, you’ll find a large selection of used books, divided by subject in different rooms. Though the organization is a bit maze-like, the feel of the place is homey and the staff is friendly. And finally, at Bibliopola, 5308 Junius, you’ll find something akin to a pack rat’s heaven, with books and a few assorted knick-knacks scattered and stacked at random. It’s overwhelming, but when you find a treasure, it certainly feels well-deserved. For information, call Mysteries and More at 214-823-4300; Paperbacks Plus at 214-828-2721; and Bibliopola at 214-370-4646.
