Woodrow Wilson began practice last month with 75 players, including 32 on the varsity level.

Mac Hill is the front-runner to start at quarterback, says veteran offensive coordinator Ron Elliot.

“It’s been typical of preseason practices so far,” Elliot says. “Some of the guys are in great shape, while others could have trained harder during the summer. All in all, our offense is a little behind our defense, but that’s typical at this time of the year.”

For first-year assistant football coach Gayla Collinsworth, the first two weeks of practice has been an enjoyable learning experience.

“You feel like you live here almost,” says Collinsworth, who also will coach team tennis this fall.

“I’m learning a lot about the individual players, loading the ball machine and scouting. Having a woman coach is no big deal to our players.”
