While it’s one of the county’s oldest roads, in 1962 this swath reopened as a newly paved six-lane thoroughfare in an effort to drive more traffic to the East Grand Shopping Center. The occasion was celebrated in unusual fashion when, instead of cutting the large ribbon that stretched across the roadway, then-Mayor Earle Cabell shot it down in front of a packed crowd using an antique .38 pistol.
