A woman died during a fire at an apartment complex in the White Rock Hills area.

Dallas-Fire Rescue units responded to a call reporting an alarm going off at 2359 Highland Road at 6:41 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, according to a fire department press release. First responders initially knocked on the door of the apartment where the alarm was heard but had to force their way in when there was no answer. Inside, a woman was found on top of a burning mattress. She was removed, and the mattress fire was extinguished, but she died from her injuries at the scene.

The woman was identified as 75-year-old Linda Jewel Scott, and she died just after 7 p.m., according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner records. Scott’s manner of death (natural causes, homicide, suicide or accidental) is pending.

The fire is under investigation.
