The building that houses the Elbow Room, at 3010 Gaston, dates back to 1933. It’s one of the last remaining historic buildings on that block, according to Preservation Dallas. And it’s in danger of being taken by eminent domain by the Texas A&M University System, which would demolish building to expand its dental school.

The 1,824-square-foot building started as a dry cleaner’s. It later housed California Flower Shop, and Berta’s Cafe operated there from 1940-1957. Several bars and restaurants were there through the 1960s until Cabaret Lounge took over in 1968.

The Elbow Room opened there in 1998.

Preservation Dallas’ annual list shines a light on disappearing Dallas, recognizing “the many significant properties that make up our neighborhoods and reflect the lives of community leaders, important architects and builders, and the families who made Dallas their home.”

This year’s list also includes the historic buildings in Downtown Dallas, Deep Ellum and Fair Park.
