Come Together for the Roxy Gordon Memorial Concert on Sunday, May 14, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Sons of Hermann Hall, 3414 Elm Street. Roxy Gordon, a Choctaw poet, gave a myriad of performances in local clubs and bookstores during the 20-plus years he lived in East Dallas. Among the many performers that will come together to celebrate his life are Terry Allen, Pleasant Grove, Richard Dobson, Tommy Lane, The Texanna Dames, Michael J. Northeast Chamber Seeking Nominations. Good Reading.  The Skillman Church of Christ also invites anyone in the neighborhood to stop by the library and browse its dedicated shelves displaying the works of outstanding Christian writers of the 20th century including Max Lucado, C. Saddle Up. Spur Award winner and author of Little Red Cowboy Hat Susan Lowell will ride in to talk about her newest book, Cindy Ellen, on May 11 at Enchanted Forest Books for Children, 6333 E. Beakman’s World. Where can you search for aliens, name your own bug and burp as loud as you can in the name of science? The Science Place’s newest exhibit, Beakman’s World on Tour from May 20-September 10. This is an “anything goes” exhibit that explores how the world works by combining asked questions, the wonder of science and a large dose of humor. Experience the mysteries of the rainforest, the human body, prehistoric dinosaurs and outer space; each section is equipped with interactive computer stations. SENIORS

Adventures In Learning.  The Greater Lakewood Shepherd’s Center’s Summer Semester of Adventures in Learning for senior adults will begin in June.  The stimulating classes, activities, and programs include square dancing, book reviews, language classes, and many more. NEIGHBORHOOD CAUSES

Resident-Only Parking. Barking Dogs, an online “cyberhood,” on Lower Greenville, has raised enough funds to provide resident-only parking at no cost to the 1900 and 2000 blocks of Summit Avenue. The cost to pay for Resident Only Parking (ROP) petitions, signage, and window hangers is an average of $300; the program was established to alleviate problems faced by homeowners near the Greenville Avenue entertainment area. Giving Days. In honor of the 30th anniversary of Earth Day, Whole Foods Market (Dallas locations) gave a portion of the proceeds from, Tuesday, April 18th’s profits to For The Love Of The Lake. Donations will go towards the on-going improvement of White Rock Lake Park.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Volunteers TeamUp, a group of students from Bryan Adams High School, earned the opportunity to spend a day with the Dallas Mavericks Basketball organization by winning the 1999/2000 TeamUp Challenge, This third annual Teamup day, in conjunction with the Volunteer Center of Dallas County, was on March 15. Students, players, staff, and personnel from Habitat for Humanity assisted in the refurbishment of two properties in Southeast Dallas. Landscaping and structural work to the houses was accomplished by these volunteers. The students won with the program they created that provided low-income elementary school students with new clothes for school. They were chosen from over 40 schools who also submitted community projects.

Leadership Forum. Lane Worrall and Valerie Richmond, students from Woodrow Wilson High School recently participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C.

AWARDS

Outstanding Teacher Awards. Four Woodrow Wilson High School teachers have been recognized for outstanding service to the school and its students. Awards recipients are Choir Director Marca Lee Bircher, Distinguished Service to Community; Theatre Arts teacher Patricia Hardman, Innovation/Creativity; Biology Teacher Tanya Tovar, Teaching Excellence; and ESOL Teacher Jean Lamberty, Words and Deeds Award for promoting a positive climate at Woodrow through teamwork and positive attitude. The recognition program is sponsored by the PTA and School Centered Education Council.

Yea Team. The Woodrow Wilson Academic Decathlon Team recently advanced to regional competition. Team members are Rene Padilla, Jose Arvizu, Adam Kaiser, Andrew Tristan, Ryan Daume, Susanah Molinar, Justin Skrakowski, Dayana Medina and Adam Zaby. English Teacher Benjamin Holloway coaches the team.

Journalism Kudos. Fifteen awards were won by Woodrow Journalism Students in the Texas Professional Communicators’ State High School Contest. Placing were: Katharine Houpt, first place, news writing; Josh Chupik, first place, editorial writing; Bianca McCallum, first place, cartoon; Justin Skrakowski, first, second and third places, columns; Tracie Wright, first place, review; Tim Berry, second place, editorial writing and news writing; Micah Shockley, second place, sports writing; Brett McDanald, third place, sports writing; Nathan Davis, second place, graphics; Chelsey Cutright, honorable mention, feature writing; and Jackson Grothe, second and third places, feature photo. The first place recipients will advance to the National Federation of Press Women’s national high school contest; Woodrow will have more representatives than any other high school in Texas. Their coach is Janelle Bates.

BIG MOVE

Fine Arts at Lakehill. With the opening of a new Fine Arts wing, Lakehill Preparatory School will have a 562-seat auditorium and performing arts stage. In addition, the building will provide two new lecture halls and six new upper school classrooms. Graduations exercises will take place in the new facility this month.
