The Dallas Northeast Chamber of Commerce has named neighborhood resident Charlotte Herr its 2007 chairman. In this capacity, she will spearhead the summer cultural arts summit, September economic summit and late fall healthcare summit. Herr is a senior financial consultant with Stephens Inc., an investment banking and brokerage firm.

 

District 107 State Rep. Allen Vaught has been appointed vice chairman of the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence. This committee oversees bills that concern criminal law, probation and parole, and criminal procedure in Texas courts. Vaught served as a United States Army Reserve Captain and fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is managing attorney of Franklin, Cardwell & Jones, P.C.

 

New officers have been named to head the Dallas Parks Foundation (DPF) in 2007. Lakewood resident Craig Reynolds will serve as president. Reynolds is a principal at Brown Reynolds Watford Architects and a fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Also newly named as DPF treasurer is neighborhood resident Robert Parks. Parks is a former member of the Dallas Park and Recreation board, and is a manager with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART).

J.L. Long Middle School announced results for its recent Reflections Competition. Of 84 entries, the works of 10 students will represent the school at the district council level. They are Jenna Zarraga, Christian Muratalla, Immanuel Saldana, Kia Forte, Maria Guerrero and Marcos Reveles, visual arts; Zachary Youpa, musical composition; Ward Weber and Brian Tepera, photography; and Elisabeth Cremeens, literature.

 

Lakewood Elementary has released names of winners from its annual Reflections Art Contest. Of 33 participants from the school, 12 advanced to the council level: Mack Reed, Katherine Deniger, Andrew DeRouen, Neali Lambert, Oscar DeLaughter, Ashley Watson, Max Zotos, Michael Tepera, Ruby McLemore, Harrison DuBose, Katherine Pound and Jeffrey Patton. Of those students, Oscar DeLaughter and Neali Lambert also advanced to the area level of competition.

 

Bishop Lynch High School boys’ swim team recently won first place in the TAPPS Division 1 North Region swimming and diving championships. The team won 10 out of 12 events. Two-event winners were Tony Rau and Tim Moore, and single-event winners were Jon Horak, Malin Kenny, Kyle Dupuis and Michael Masters. Masters set a new school record of 5 minutes, 10.08 seconds in the 500 freestyle.

 

Bishop Lynch High School girls’ swim team finished in fourth place in the recent TAPPS Division 1 North Region swimming and diving championships. In one-meter diving, Nichole Burgess finished second, Shana Brockman, third, and Abbie Sheffield, sixth. Alex Brown won fifth place in swimming’s 200 individual medley, and Danna Callahan placed fifth in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle.

 

Students from St. John’s Episcopal School took home top honors at the recent Dallas-area Episcopal School Spelling Bee. After volleying 20 words in the final round, fifth-grader Kevyn Brook Anderson spelled “dichotomy” to win first place at her very first spelling bee. Emilie Frank, an eighth-grader at St. John’s, won second place. Both students went on to compete at the regional bee.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the Senior Source is looking for volunteers age 55+ to volunteer with more than 230 non-profit agencies in Dallas and Collin counties. The Child Abuse Prevention Center needs volunteers to work with children of divorcing parents one Saturday morning a month during its Families First seminars. The CAP Center also has openings for volunteers in the Parent Aide Program. Volunteers work in the home with parents and families at risk for child abuse and neglect.
