Fund-raiser pays off: More than 200 people raised more than $41,000 at a fall run-raiser for East Dallas’ Wilkinson Center. The event, chaired by Bronywn Maris, featured a silent auction.

Lakewood resident named: Alan Schonborn has named vice president of children, youth and family services at the Juliette Fowler Homes in East Dallas. Schonborn has been at Fowler for 16 years, most recently as director of youth care.

New office: Eleanor Mowrey-Sheets has added a downtown real estate office, Eleanor/Urban, serving East Dallas. The office will be staffed by Kyle Byrom and Robert Kucharski.

Residents get ticket home: Bea Edwards and Socorro Martinez of East Dallas and Gladys Scammel and Mary Ellen French of Lakewood are among 18 Dallas-area seniors who received free airline tickets home for the holidays as part of a project by Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas and Southwest Airlines. Recipients were selected based on financial need and reason for travel.

Doggie Den opens: Dee’s Doggie Den, a pet daycare center, has opened at the corner of Skillman and Mockingbird. The business, operated by Donnie Fast, also offers boarding, grooming and obedience classes. For information, call 214-823-1441.

Birthday party benefit: Carina Chavarria-Chairez celebrated her eighth birthday with a party benefiting the Brady Center, the Catholic Charities program in East Dallas. She sent invitations to her friends asking them to bring toys, games, books, clothing and shoes to donate to East Dallas’ needy children.

New neighborhood group: The Lower Greenville West Neighborhood Association has been formed, covering some 800 people in the area formed by Greenville Avenue, Belmont Avenue, North Henderson, and Ross Avenue. Membership is open to anyone older than 18 who lives in the area. For information, call Pamela Stephenson at 214-828-4999.

Stonewall Jackson was among 15 Dallas and Fort Worth area schools selected by the Texas Education Agency to compete for a Blue Ribbon Award from the U.S. Department of Education. Stonewall was selected based on criteria that included test scores, relationship with the community, and programs that provide educational opportunity.

Award winners:  Seniors Emily Stone and Casa Murphy and junior Jackson Grothe took first places in the Visions of Dallas photography contest. Stone won in the school and education category; Murphy won in architecture/building; and Grothe won in transportation.

Students honored: David Hendler, who lives near White Rock Lake, won first place in the Association of Texas Photography Instructors fall contest in the black and white student life category. Hendler is a senior at Greenhill School.

Woodrow Wilson students won six awards, including first places from Vianel Munoz-Vidal (color student life) and Jackson Grothe (color sports action).

Hurricane Mitch donations: Several East Dallas schools, including Woodrow Wilson and Lipscomb, held drives in November to raise food and clothing to the survivors of Hurricane Mitch in Central America.

Woodrow newspaper wins: The Wildcat was runner-up and its sutdent staffers won 14 individual awards in Texas High School Press Association competition. Jadranka Poljak  earned four mentions, including a first plaxce in general/special column.

PROGRAMS

Lasagna supper: Lakewood Elementary will hold  its annual family lasagna supper at 5:30 p.m. January 14 in the school cafeteria. Tickets are $3 in advance and $3.50 at the door. For information, call Lee Kendall at 214-826-8197.

AWARDS

Bryan’s House volunteer honored: Tom Bratcher, a handyman at Bryan’s House since the home for HIV-infected children opened more than a decade ago, has been honored by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The group recognizes individuals and organizations that provide exceptional volunteer services.

Two from Chavez: Principal Laura Escalante-Brown and volunteer Alfred Carrizales of the Cesar Chavez Learning Center are among the recipients of Hispanic Salute ’98, which honors Hispanics for their contributions to education and literacy.
