Kindergarten RoundUp. Bring your soon-to-be kindergartner (turning five by Sept. 1, 2000) to Kindergarten RoundUp at Lakewood Elementary, 3000 Hillbrook, Thursday, Feb. 17, 6:30-8 p.m., for a fun-filled and informative evening. Tour the school, see physical education and music demonstrations, have refreshments and pick up pre-registration packets. Learning Disabilities College Night. On Feb. 7, Dallas Academy, 950 Tiffany Way, is hosting its fifth annual College Night from 7-9 a.m. in the Alberts Athletic Center. The school will help parents and students make an informed choice about colleges prepared to deal with learning disabilities such as dyslexia or attention deficit disorder. Lakehill Kudos. Assistant Headmaster, Lara Gajkowski, was recently selected to become a member of the North Texas Chorale. Senior Veronica Glaze was one of 10 students in Texas to attend the Pan American Student Forum in Mexico. Third grader Alina Rick won three silver medals at the Mid-Continent Skating Competition in Wichita, Ks. And first grader Katherine Crocker performed in her second season with the El Centro Performing Arts Club dinner show.

St. Bernard Science Awards. Students from St. Bernard of Clairvaux Catholic School competed in the Winston Science Fair in 40 competitive events involving 700 schools and over 10,000 participants. Seventh grade student Christopher Cornell placed first in short story fiction, shadow photography and Star Trek trivia. For St. Bernard student and Bishop Lynch High School student Nick Martin place first in short story fiction and short film.

Woodrow Highlights. Senior Andrea Saenz has received the Greater Dallas Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. Andrea is in the National Honor Society, FCCLA Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Woodrow Student Council. Bennet Nworie has been named Woodrow’s Teacher of the Year. He established the school’s Developmental Center for special education students and has been instrumental in integrating students into school activities.

Bryan Adams Teacher. Peggy Leeman, Lake Highlands resident and a teacher at Bryan Adams High School, was recently honored as Advanced Placement English Literature Teacher of the Year at the Advanced Placement Math, Science and English Awards Ceremony held by the O’Donnell Foundation. She was instrumental in bringing the program to the school. Bryan Adams’ Kelly Fortner won AP Incentive Program English Language Teacher of the Year.

Tiger in Their Tank. Paul and Sasha send their thanks to the ecology class at St. John’s Episcopal School who took up a donation on their behalf. The couple are Sumatran tigers living in the Exxon Endangered Species Habitat at the Dallas Zoo.

Off-to-College Reports. Bryan Adams High School graduate Bryan Matthew Kilburn was among the 800 graduates in winter commencement at Stephen F. Austin State University.

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Clog Away. A nonprofit organization, Clog Dance, offers Tuesday evening classes for beginners at 130 Ferguson Village Shopping Center. Classes are from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Call 214-321-5949.

Vikings. Stephen Metcalf’s acclaimed play about three conflicting generations of hardheaded males will be the Pocket Sandwich Theatre’s “Vanity Showcase Production 2000.” Performances are Feb. 24 through March 25; tickets $6-$14. IN THE NEWS

Lauck Group. Lakewood resident Anne Bulmer Mott was recently hired as director of strategic programming for the local interior architecture/design and consulting firm. Mott analyzes client’s business processes to create “smart spaces.”

Texans’ Coat Drive. Texans Credit Union recently collected about 300 coats, sweaters, and other clothing items during its first annual coat drive. New and gently used items were collected in all Texans branch locations from mid-October through mid-November. Most of the clothing received was donated to the Salvation Army, who distributed the items to people in need.

New Vet. Dr. Karen Fling has announced the opening of the East Lake Veterinary Hospital (ELVH) at 10101 E. Northwest Highway. The extensive facility, which is currently being considered for the Hospital Design Award by Veterinary Economics, offers full veterinary services, and luxury boarding and grooming for cats and dogs. In addition ELVH operates a  Pet Orphanage that is visible from the waiting area, and clients are welcome to drop and to enjoy a cup of coffee from the coffee bar, visit the orphans or offer weekend fostering.
