Here’s an unusual volunteer opportunity. The East Lake Pet Orphanage needs people who can drive injured and orphaned wild birds to a sanctuary in Hutchins, which is about a 16-mile drive.

The animal shelter on Northwest Highway is a drop-off location for wild birds that are injured or baby birds that have fallen out of their nests, for example. The shelter puts the birds in boxes for transport, and volunteers drive them to Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Volunteers call ahead to make sure there are birds to chauffer that day.

Winter isn’t the busiest season for wild-bird urgent care, but last spring and summer, East Lake Pet Orphanage volunteers transported 300 birds. To volunteer, email bell-susan@sbcglobal.net. More information is available here.
