Saks Global, the parent company of Neiman Marcus, said that they are working with City of Dallas officials to discuss the potential for a “new, innovative format to serve its customers and the community while supporting the resurgence of Downtown Dallas.”

What will this look like? The release mentioned potential for a luxury retail experience, a curated art exhibition, a fashion and event center and an incubator for fashion design and manufacturing. However, nothing is yet set in stone.

“We deeply admire the city’s passion and unwavering dedication to Neiman Marcus’ storied legacy in Dallas. The potential reimagination of this iconic shopping destination reinforces Saks Global’s commitment to redefining the luxury shopping experience,” Chief Executive Officer of Saks Global Marc Metrick said in the release. “As we explore opportunities for the Downtown store, along with the planned renovation at the NorthPark store, we will evaluate the opportunity to utilize both locations to serve different customer needs in the Dallas market.”

The Downtown Dallas location is the flagship store for Neiman Marcus, which opened its luxury retail experience with southern flair in 1907. Though it had to be rebuilt in 1914 due to a fire, the current building has been standing in its place since.

“We are excited that Saks Global has decided to keep Neiman Marcus open downtown, as we explore the opportunity to unlock the potential to transform downtown into an international beacon and economic engine for fashion – just as the Neiman Marcus founders intended when they opened the store more than 100 years ago,” said Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “We look forward to exploring what‘s on the horizon and are committed to continuing our conversations with the Saks Global team.”

The announcement comes after a slew of conflicting reports following an announcement that the store would be closing on March 31. Saks Global Properties released a statement after rumors circulated that the store would stay open, alleging that the landlords of the property refused to provide a price to purchase the land or come to a “commercially reasonable agreement.”

“Dallas continues to be a top market for the Neiman Marcus brand. Based on customer data, we know that the overwhelming majority of our Dallas customer base prefers to shop at our NorthPark store. We look forward to the $100 million renovation of this location, enabling us to offer a new level of luxury fashion and service at one of our premier store locations,” Metrick said in the Feb. 27 announcement. We know that the local community shares in our disappointment about losing a piece of Neiman Marcus history, but customers have expressed their excitement about the reimagination of NorthPark.”

It’s safe to say that the public outcry around the closing was a factor in it’s extension. In the weeks following the announcement, lines flowed out of the door with generations of customers aiming to shop there one last time.

Neiman Marcus Downtown Dallas is located at 1618 Main St. and is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
