Excellence in education is driven by innovation and by educators who are willing to rethink, reimagine, and create new pathways for student success.
This month, I am proud to recognize Yasmeen Harris-Youngblood, librarian at Victor H. Hexter Elementary School, who is a finalist for the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee Educator of the Year. This national honor reflects not only her individual achievement, but the innovative practices that are shaping student success right here in District 3.
With more than two decades of experience in education, Ms. Harris-Youngblood has transformed literacy at Hexter Elementary into a dynamic, engaging, and student-centered experience. She has built a culture where reading, writing, and academic achievement are not only encouraged, but celebrated. She has created an environment where students see themselves as capable scholars.
One of the most powerful examples of her innovation is how she reimagined the traditional spelling bee. What was once a small academic activity is now one of the most anticipated events on campus. By expanding participation and elevating student voice, she has created a space where students of all backgrounds, abilities, and home languages feel empowered to step forward and succeed.
This approach challenges long-standing assumptions about who excels academically. Under her leadership, students are given opportunities to grow, participate, and achieve at high levels.
Her commitment to innovation extends beyond Hexter Elementary. As a board member of the Work Meaningful Foundation, she supports initiatives that connect education with service and global impact. Through her platform, The Trekking Teacher, she brings together storytelling, education, and international exploration to inspire curiosity and broaden perspectives.
Her experiences climbing mountains across Africa, South America, and Europe inform her work in the classroom, reinforcing the importance of resilience and stepping beyond one’s comfort zone; lessons that directly translate into student growth and confidence.
Ms. Harris-Youngblood represents what is possible when innovation and excellence come together in education. She is creating meaningful experiences for students, expanding access to opportunities, and setting a standard that benefits not only Hexter Elementary, but our entire district.
For District 3, this recognition is a moment of pride and a reminder of the exceptional work happening in our schools every day.
To Ms. Harris-Youngblood: thank you for your leadership, your creativity, and your unwavering commitment to students. Your work is a powerful example of innovation in action, and its impact will be felt far beyond the classroom.
