Shaun Logan received Texas A&M System’s Provost Academic Professional Track Faculty Teaching Excellence Award during a ceremony in College Station. She was one of 10 to receive the award that honors effective teaching and student-centered learning, according to a press release from the College of Dentistry.

The award came with a $5,000 stipend, and Logan plans to spend the money on “support(ing) her teaching approach and for professional development,” according to the press release.

“We take great pride in her achievements, and she is truly worthy of the award,” said Dr. John Neubert, biomedical sciences’ new department head, in the press release.

Logan has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in biology as well as a doctorate in pharmacology and neuroscience from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. She started working at the College of Dentistry in 2010 as a postdoctoral research associate, was promoted to assistant professor in 2017 and became an associate professor in 2023.

Regarding her philosophy on teaching, Logan said in the press release, “My goal is to foster a dynamic, student-centered classroom where learners are not just absorbing information but actively engaging in the learning process, building connections and developing critical-thinking skills.”

Logan was nominated for the Provost Academic Professional Track Faculty Teaching Excellence Award by her colleague Lynne Opperman, who recently retired as a biomedical sciences professor.

“Her fairness makes her invaluable as a constant beacon for the students to use to calibrate themselves as they move through the challenges of the dental education program,” Opperman said in the press release. “Even with her large load of teaching responsibilities, Shaun has managed to sustain a productive research program.”
