Deep Ellum was featured in Southern Living’s May 2021 issue. The magazine noted the district’s iconic bars and restaurants, including Pecan Lodge and Terry Black’s Barbecue.

It also mentioned Deep Ellum’s origins as one of Dallas’ first commercial districts for African Americans and European immigrants, founded in 1873.

Deep Ellum now has about 20 historically recognized buildings, including the Continental Gin Company building, a cotton gin factory built by Robert S. Munger in 1888.
