This weekend, protests broke out across Dallas, including Deep Ellum, in response to the death of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Most of the protests were peaceful, but some resulted in looting. Many businesses boarded their windows to prevent looters from entering while others boarded up after being broken into. Around Deep Ellum, protesters spray-painted empowering statements over the boards, such as “BLM” and “Stop the violence.” Some artists painted murals of others killed by members of the police force, such as Atatiana Jefferson and Botham Jean.
