Dan D. Rogers Elementary, 5314 Abrams, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month.
The school is named after Daniel Dixon Rogers, a banker and philanthropist who was a long-time member of the Dallas School Board, says Desiree Welch Schorn, director of PTA programs.
Rogers, an avid supporter of sports programs, was known as “Mr. Cotton Bowl” and was the president of the athletic association in charge of the football event, Schorn says.
He died in 1952. DISD opened the school in his memory with the motto: “Expecting Excellence Daily.”
To celebrate the school’s 40th anniversary, the PTA is inviting former students and other people from the school’s past to the PTA Founders Day meeting Feb. 16.
Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., and a special program is scheduled for 7 p.m. If you have stories about Rogers or old photographs from the school, contact Schorn at 670-6676.
Lakehill Students Give Instead of Receive
Students at Lakehill Preparatory School turned the tables on Santa this holiday season. Rather than receiving gifts, they gave gifts to Santa.
Each student in kindergarten through sixth grade brought a present to the school last month during a Parade of Gifts. The presents were sent to underprivileged children living in a shelter.
The school’s headmaster, Roger Perry, dressed up as Santa Claus during the parade, and assistant headmaster Dianne Harris dressed as Mrs. Claus.
The Lakehill senior class prepared a traditional holiday dinner for approximately 75 senior citizens, Harris says. This is the 11th year Lakehill has hosted the event, and some senior citizens have been coming every year since the first dinner, Harris says.

RAISING MONEY FOR LAKEWOOD: A fund-raiser for Lakewood Elementary will be held Jan. 21 at the Lakewood Country Club, 6430 Gaston, at 6 p.m. The event will include bingo, a buffet and a silent auction. Tickets for the buffet and bingo cost $25 and can be purchased at the school office, 3000 Hillbrook. Tickets for bingo ONLY cost $15. Call 841-5250 for information.
Friends of Lakewood, a support organization for the school, has also begun its annual fund-raising efforts. For information, call the group’s president, Cooter Hale, at 827-3612.
IMMUNIZATION CLINICS: The Woodrow/Long Health Center and the Dallas Police Department’s Weed and Seed program sponsors immunization clinics at neighborhood schools. Children of all ages can be immunized for $3. Parents must be present, and all previous immunization records are required. The clinics are open from 3-6 p.m. On Jan. 9, the clinic will be at Zaragoza Elementary, 4550 Worth: on Feb. 13, the clinic will be at Fannin Elementary, 4800 Ross.
