From single-gender campuses and STEM/STEAM schools to the Two-Way Dual Language program, there is a best-fit school and program for every student.
The District 2 specialty schools and programs include:
- The International Baccalaureate program at Benjamin Franklin International Exploratory Academy, J.L. Long Middle School, and Hillcrest and Woodrow Wilson high schools;
- The collegiate academies at Hillcrest and North Dallas high schools;
- The Two-Way Dual Language program at Preston Hollow, Ben Milam, William Lipscomb, Geneva Heights, Lakewood, and Mockingbird elementary schools and K.B. Polk Fine Arts Vanguard.
Families can go to http://www.dallasisd.org/yourchoices to apply to a Dallas ISD specialty school or program by the Jan. 31 deadline.
Meanwhile, Jan. 31 is also the deadline for high school students to apply for the 2019 Mayor’s Summer Intern Fellows program. The program offers an eight-week paid internship with a local company or nonprofit agency. Students can go to www.mayorsinterns.org to apply.
In other application news, all seniors at North Dallas, Hillcrest and Woodrow Wilson high schools have the opportunity to earn up to a full-tuition scholarship to a Dallas County Community College through the Dallas County Promise Scholarship.
The Dallas County Communication College District Foundation is providing scholarships that cover the cost of tuition at any Dallas County Community College for up to three years or the completion of an associate degree (whichever comes first). Participating students will also have access to additional transfer scholarships to attend partner four-year universities, including the University of North Texas at Dallas. Interested seniors must sign a “Promise Pledge” no later than Feb. 8 to qualify. Go here to learn more and sign the pledge.
Lastly, Dallas ISD’s annual STEM Expo is set for Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center. The event is free and open to all Dallas-area families, but those planning to attend should go here and register.

Congratulations to J.L. Long Middle School teacher Nadirah Shakir for being named one of two Dallas ISD teachers of the year at a Jan. 16 ceremony. Dan D. Rogers Elementary School teacher Sheri Kirby was also named of one the 10 Teacher of the Year finalists.
Woodrow Wilson High School senior Sophia Rogers will represent the school’s choir program as part of the 2019 All-State Treble Choir in San Antonio.
Dustin Marshall is the District 2 representative on the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees.
