Dallas ISD making encouraging progress in serving students with special needs

I want to share some of the encouraging progress Dallas ISD is making in serving families with students with special needs.

The Dallas ISD Special Education Department facilitated 11 events this month to support families with children with special needs. From workshops for parents on how to encourage social behavior with their child to an open dialogue about services, programs and initiatives, the month was full of events helping enhance communication and support for families with one or more children receiving special education services from Dallas ISD.  

In January and in the future, Dallas ISD Special Education Executive Director Michelle Brown will meet in-person with families as part of the Spotlight on SPED events. Families who attend will hear about important and key information regarding special education services; learn how to empower their child and have a voice at ARD meetings and their child’s Individual Education Program (IEP) development; and network with other parents and serve as a support group for each other.

Meanwhile, the district has formed the Special Education Parent Advisory Group made of parents and community leaders across the district. The advisory group works closely with the Dallas ISD Special Education Department to identify and address any issues or concerns regarding special education services. Each trustee appoints two representatives to serve on the advisory group.

I look forward to continuing to monitor and watch the district’s progress in serving these families in need of our support.

Mark your calendar for Feb. 21 for the second annual Geneva Nights, which supports the school and Pre-Geneva Association, which is dedicated to parents of small children planning to attend the school for pre-K or kindergarten. I’m proud to sponsor this great event happening at the Granada Theatre.

The Woodrow Wilson High School Girls Swim Team is the 14-5A winners of January’s Dallas ISD swim meet. They now go on to compete in the regionals, with the ultimate hope of competing in–and winning–the state championship.

I want to remind families that Feb. 7 is the deadline for Hillcrest, Woodrow and North Dallas high school seniors to take the Promise Pledge to qualify for the Dallas County Promise Scholarship, which provides last-dollar tuition scholarships to any Dallas County Community College campus and partner universities.
