At the beginning of the school year, we could not have imagined we’d be watching our District 2 seniors from Woodrow Wilson, Hillcrest and North Dallas high schools graduate in virtual ceremonies due to a dangerous and potentially deadly virus threatening the world.

But despite these circumstances, I am unbelievable proud of the Class of 2020 for their resilience during this time. How they are facing and overcoming adversity right now will provide a foundation for how they can succeed the rest of their life. 

There will be no challenge they cannot overcome after living through this. I know this time of social distancing is not something anyone would ask for, regardless of the life and character skills it could produce. But I am inspired by how they are moving forward, determined to succeed regardless of the circumstances. I could not be prouder to be their District 2 trustee.

Learning and meals continue over the summer

Dallas ISD will continue offering bulk grab-and-go meal service in June and likely again in July to all children through the age of 18. Bulk grab-and-go meal service brings an immense benefit to our community, providing hundreds of thousands of meals to students to ensure they won’t go hungry while school buildings are closed. Meanwhile, virtual learning opportunities will continue over the summer. The Dallas ISD at-home learning page will continue providing new lesson plans and resources over the summer.  

I also encourage District 2 families to participate in the Dallas Public Library’s SMART Summer with Mayor Johnson. Students 18 and younger who read, or are read to, at least 20 minutes a day earn a free book for every 10 days of reading, up to five times through August 15. Dallas ISD School Closure Survey
To better understand how Dallas ISD can best serve students and families, the district is gathering feedback from parents about their experiences during the recent school closures due to COVD-19 health and safety guidelines. The survey answers are confidential and will help the district determine how to open and operate in the 2020–2021 school year. Go here to learn more and fill out the survey.

Fill out the census
The deadline to fill out the census has been extended to Oct. 31. The census is important because the data is used to allocate more than $675 billion in federal funds to states and communities each year for the next 10 years. The funding includes money for school programs and services such as special education, free and reduced-price lunches, class size reduction, technology purchases, teacher training, and afterschool activities.
